Citizenship for Adult
A permanent resident must meet a specific set of requirements to be deemed eligible to apply for citizenship. Among other requirements, applicants will also need to provide proof that they have been living in Canada for three years (1,095 days) out of the five years that precede their signed application.
Eligibility Requirements
- Be a permanent resident of Canada.
- Proof that you can communicate in English or French (unless you are 55yrs and above, or a minor below 18yrs).
- Pass a test on your knowledge and understanding of the Canadian history and the responsibilities and rights of being a citizen, in English or French.
- Have filed your taxes for a minimum of 3 taxation years in the past 5years (if necessitated by the Income Tax Act) before your application.
- Have physically stayed in Canada as a permanent resident for a minimum of 3 years (1,095 days) in the last 5 years prior to your application. Time spent outside Canada can also be counted if:
- You are a PR who was working for or with the Canadian Armed Forces, public service, or the state public administration.
- You spent time outside Canada with your Canadian common-law partner or spouse, or PR spouse, common-law partner, or parent who was working for or with the public service, federal administration, or Canadian Armed Forces.
Citizenship for Minor Children
Children who are Permanent residents of Canada and are under the age of 18 can apply for a grant of citizenship under minor category.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be under the age of 18.
- Be a permanent resident of Canada.
- Have filed your taxes for a minimum of 3 taxation years in the past 5years (if necessitated by the Income Tax Act) before your application if the age of minor is under 18 and not accompanying the Canadian parent at the same time of application.
- Have physically stayed in Canada as a permanent resident for a minimum of 3 years (1,095 days) in the last 5 years if the age of minor is under 18 and not accompanying the Canadian parent at the same time of application.
Citizenship for your adopted child
If your adopted child is already a permanent resident, you can apply for a grant of citizenship.
Eligibility Requirements
- Not be a Canadian Citizen.
- Have at least one (1) adoptive parent who, at the time of their adoption, was or is a Canadian citizen,
- Not subjected to the first-generation limit to citizenship by descent except eligible to benefit from one of the exceptions to the first-generation limit.
- Meet the requirements of the Citizenship Act.
Resume Canadian Citizenship
A former Canadian Citizen can apply to resume the Canadian Citizenship.
Eligibility Requirements
- Have been a Canadian citizen.
- Have become a permanent resident of Canada after you lost your Canadian citizenship.
- Have no unfulfilled conditions relating to your status as a permanent resident.
- Have been physically present in Canada as a permanent resident for at least 365 days in the two years immediately before you apply.
- Have met the personal income tax filing obligations for the taxation year immediately before the application.
- Previous citizenship was not revoked.
- Not having a removal order to leave Canada.
- Not prohibited from being Canadian Citizenship.
